Big problems with small debts and collections

08.27.2010 · Posted in Debt Solutions

I was unemployed a few years ago and most of my debts went to collections.  The only accounts that I kept current were 2 credit cards and a small personal loan. I have a job now but my hours were cut due to the recession so I don’t make enough money to pay the collection agencies along with my current debts. I have checked some debt assistance programs but they are all for credit card debt and that is not my biggest problem (I only owe about $1100 on credit cards). I don’t have anyone who can loan me money to help me out of this mess. I would really like to increase my credit score. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There’s no way to boost your credit score if you have several accounts in collections. It stay in your files for 7 years. The only solution in this case is bankruptcy. That stays on your credit files for 10 years but after 2 years you should be able to start rebuilding your credit. Hopefully your finances will be better at that time.

I was in a similar situation a few years ago. I had several accounts that were sent to collections. What I eventually did was use a credit repair company that a friend recommended to me. They worked wonders on my credit. In about a year my credit score was at 700. I won’t give a link to their site but the company’s name starts with Lexington.

    Good luck.

A second job is your most viable option but if they isn’t possible due to commitments. If you have some assets you may want to consider a consolodation loan to pay off your current debt and put your payments into one more management debt. The problem is you’re lending more money and paying more back, but if you keep ontop of payments it will increase your credit score.

Gosh. You got such a difficult situation there. From my point of view, you have to find a job which is not too much relied on the recession. For example, online jobs. I got experience with having my expenses being cut down during recession. Thanks to blogging and online jobs – I survived!

You should consider other options such as bankruptcy. Bankruptcy can allow you to start rebuilding your credit after your debts have been discharged in the bankruptcy. If you are concerned about the effects on your credit, it is unlikely that it will worsen it much more than it is already given that you have not paid certain debts in awhile. Chapter 7 bankruptcy can help you eliminate unsecured debts such as medical bills, personal loans, credit card bills, and any debts from repossessions and foreclosures.

When considering whether to pay off a collection account or not in regards to improving your credit score, you must consider several factors. The first is to look at the age of the debt. The older the date of the debt, the less impact it has on your credit score. In the past, if you paid it off, it would renew the date as recent activity and would actually create a negative impact on your credit rating.

All I know is one does not want to load more money to pay off money already owned this is never a good idea. Start paying back the smaller debts first and then move on to the bigger ones.

Hi! I’m sorry to hear that you lost your job but it a good thing that you found a new one. What I can suggest is for you to cut off unnecessary expenses to lower you spending and just buy for the things that you really need. Make a list of you where your money goes to keep track of it and eventually, it will help you save more. Have a great day!

If you have only 1100 dollars of debt never do bankruptcy. If you have to get a second job to pay them down that is your best bet. Bankruptcy is for large amount of debt and your options do not weigh for such a band credit bump.

  • Adam from the Free Annual Credit Reports January 29, 2011 at 9:00 am

Bankruptcy and the second job are both good advice.

If you see your financial issues continuing to be bad in the near future, bankruptcy makes more sense. In my experiences, having two jobs for more than a year or so will completely burn a person out and is not a good long term solution.

With bankruptcy, you can get a fresh start and begin building your credit by obtaining secured credit cards or secured bank loans. Of course, the bankruptcy will hang around for quite awhile on your credit report.

Good luck and keep your head up.
