How do I get a free credit report from each of the major credit bureaus?

08.29.2011 · Posted in Credit Repair

I heard on CNN that you can get one free credit report per year from each of the 4 major credit bureaus.

Does anyone know the names of the credit bureaus, the number to call (or address) and what you need to do to get a free copy of your credit report?

      Here’s what you need…

The three major credit bureaus are:

      1. Equifax – http://www.equifax.com/
      2. Experian – http://www.experian.com/
      3. TransUnion – http://www.transunion.com

By law, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) now requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies (listed above) to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months. For more information, read “Facts for Consumers: Your Access to Free Credit Reports” at FTC.gov.

There are three ways to obtain a Free Credit Report under the FCRA:

      1. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com (the only authorized site to fill orders for the free annual credit report you are entitled to under law)
      2. Call 1-877-322-8228 and request your free credit report
      3. Complete the Annual Credit Report Request Form (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/include/requestformfinal.pdf) and mail it to:

      Annual Credit Report Request Service
      P.O. Box 105281
      Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

If you have the need for a second report, use FreeCreditReport.com. Just be sure to cancel your trial membership within 30 days or you’ll be charged $12.95/month thereafter.

      Hope this helps,

      -Tim

You need to go to their websites.
Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax are the big THREE. They have free versions of your credit report and then they have added features for a fee. If you want to dispute anything – you can do that online as well.

This is a great resource to have. I started grabbing my free report a few years ago, just for the heck of it. I was able to find that 2 collection agencies had incorrectly posted incorrect strikes on my report. If I didn’t have the report, my credit history would be hurting these days.

While you can go to each bureau and get individual reports, I’m still a big fan of the consolidated credit report that combines all three reports on one report and lists each item and then each bureaus results. It makes it a breeze to spot inconsistencies rather than have to flip between different reports with different formats.

      This is quite interesting.

For your Australian readers, while you have to pay to obtain it online, if you request to have it sent by post (up to 3 week turnaround time) they will do it for free. Not sure if there’s a yearly limit though…

WOW that’s news to me – I guess the essential thing is cancelling on time before you get billed. That’s how these guys make a lot of their money. It doesn’t seem like these companies make that clear enough as there are still so many people that are skeptical around free credit reports

I suggest, you should search on the web for the list of credit bureaus. Most of them provide informations that you can able to use and contact. Surely, all contact infos are posted on their personal sites.

Must be better to search it on the web to confirm if this is true or hoax only. If you could get some information about this and there are many people who could affirm that this is true then we could say it is true.

You should check your report more frequently than once per year. Quarterly is probably a good idea, especially now days with so many bits and bytes of information flyng through the air and made available on the internet. The once a year freebie is great, but check it more often than every 12 months.
